Spend an evening at the STEAM Factory for another exciting Franklinton Friday!
The evening will feature engaging micro-lectures and discussions from Ohio State Faculty.
Features include:
Subglacial Alien Life
Joel Barker
Alien life has been lurking beneath Earth’s most inhospitable environment for millions of years, and has now been given the opportunity to escape. The world is a much different place now than it was when these creatures were last entombed. What will they tell us about life in the icy prison that they have been confined to?
An Icy Giant on the Move
Michalea King
High in the Arctic, frozen rivers slowly flow from the Greenland Ice Sheet into the surrounding ocean. Scientists from the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center recently worked near the largest of these frozen rivers, called glaciers, studying changes taking place. This talk describes what it is like working in polar environments, how glaciers move and evolve, and why scientists care about these icy giants.
Blood Glacier
Chris Gardner
In a remote valley in Antarctica where the East Antarctic Ice Sheet ends, there is a glacier that bleeds. Its blood red discharge is four times saltier than seawater and contains microbes that have been living under the glacier in below-freezing temperatures and total darkness for over 2 million years. We'll explore how this unusual water formed and what it means for life in extreme environments.
