Seminar by Dr. Brent Sohngen - Professor, Department of Agriculture, Environmental, and Develpmental Economics

This research examines the interaction between forests and the atmosphere. Since 1900, around 130 Pg C have been emitted into the atmosphere due deforestation and conversion of forests to agricultural uses. Over the same time period around 150 Pg C have been removed from the atmosphere by forests. Much of this removal has been attributed to climate change and carbon fertilization. Little attention has been paid to the role of forest management. This presentation quantifies the role that forest management has played in sequestering carbon, showing that it is surprisingly large and important. This role for forests has important implications for managing atmospheric carbon in the future, through direct actions to sequester carbon, actions to use forests for energy, and other activities that influence surface reflectivity.
