Dr. Rong Fu: What is Driving the Rapid Drying and Warming Over the Amazon in Recent Decades?

Fri, October 23, 2026
3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
18th Ave. Library (Room 340)

Join the Department of Geography and Geography Graduate Organization for the 2026 Robinson Lecture featuring Dr. Rong Fu from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Dr. Fu will explore the causes behind the rapid drying and warming observed across the Amazon rainforest in recent decades. While previous research has linked these changes to ocean temperature patterns in the tropical Pacific and Atlantic, as well as land-use changes, recent studies suggest that intensification of the Hadley circulation driven by human activities may be a primary contributor.

This lecture will highlight new research on the atmospheric processes driving increasingly extreme dry, warm, and windy conditions in the Amazon and their implications for understanding regional climate change.

All are welcome to attend and learn more about the changing climate of the Amazon rainforest.
