David Showalter is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Plant Pathology in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. In September 2014, David launched a campaign on the research crowdfunding website Experiment.com to raise money to study natural tree resistance to the emerald ash borer, an invasive beetle species. David’s team succeeded in meeting their goal for the campaign and have subsequently shared their research and raised awareness of the emerald ash borer infestation. Using examples from his project, David will talk about the work that goes into setting up and running a crowdfunding campaign as well as some of the hidden costs and benefits.
