Below are images and a video that share the current state of the ice core facility and show why replacement/renovation is urgently needed.    


 

Refrigeration units are located outside and are very outdated.
The entire facility and equipment is over 30 years old.
Frost build up on the ceiling of the Ice Core Freezer caused by warm, moist air leaking into the freezer.

Old, peeling white paint on the ceiling is exposing a brown wall
Paint and structure is breaking down due to frost build up.  Byrd personnel have to scrape ice and snow off of the ceiling, walls and floors on a monthly basis to maintain clear and safe access.

The inside freezer doors are in poor condition and allow moist air to enter freezer.  The door seals have been patched/resealed many times.

Exterior wall leaking air. The majority of the wall is light tan but where leaks have started to form there is discoloration.
Exterior wall leaking air from the poor condition of the roof flashing.  This has been patched many times with foam and tape, but the leaks continue.
2 gray pipes are installed along a wall and they have become discolored due to insulation deterioration.
Insulation is deteriorating and has been patched many times.
