Joseph Chan receives Young Investigator Program award from the Office of Naval Research
Assistant Professor Dr. Joseph Chan (Ohio State Dept. of Geog. and Byrd Center PI) has been awarded a prestigious Young Investigator Program (YIP) research grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR). His successful YIP research proposal (title: Improving the Navy’s Numerical Atmospheric Predictions by Advancing Novel Transformative Low-Cost Forecast Ensemble Creation Method) aims to enhance the US Navy's atmospheric prediction capabilities. Over the next three years, his research group will receive roughly $720,000 from ONR for this project. This research will be a part of the Marine Meteorology and Space Weather Program in the Ocean Battlespace Sensing Department of ONR and will be supported by Program Officers Dr. Daniel Eleuterio and Dr. Joshua Cossuth.
The ONR YIP is comparable to the prestigious NSF CAREER award and was established in 1985 as a highly competitive program for early-career academics in science and technology fields. This year, only 24 awardees were selected from a pool of over 230 tenure-track or equivalent applicants from colleges and universities nationwide.
