Call for Participants: The Past, Present, and Future of the International Polar Year

Mon, October 12 - Mon, November 30, 2026
12:01 am - 11:59 pm
Columbus, OH

2032/33 will mark the fifth International Polar Year (IPY) since the first global polar research effort began in 1882. In anticipation of this milestone, the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, the journal Environmental History, and Ohio State’s Environmental History Initiative are convening an interdisciplinary workshop to explore the history, impact, and future promise of the International Polar Years. \

This gathering will bring together scholars from a variety of disciplines to:

  • Share ideas and emerging research questions
  • Exchange methods, resources, and data
  • Build new collaborations across fields
  • Help shape future polar research initiatives

Rather than presenting completed research, participants will be invited to "show and tell" disciplinary approaches, potential sources, and unanswered questions / potential research avenues designed to spark conversation and collaboration. To express interest in being a participant, please email a one-page CV and a 250-word statement about what you are interested in contributing to the interdisciplinary discussion. For questions about participating or attending, or to submit materials, email Ellen Arnold at (arnold.1422@osu.edu) by November 30, 2026.
