Side-event 11: Glaciers and loss and damage in the Third Pole Environment
Part of the official program for the celebration of the first World Day for Glacier and World Water Day!
- Date: 21 March 2025
- Time: 16:00-17:30 CET
- Location: Room VI, UNESCO HQ, Paris
This upcoming event on Third Pole glaciers will highlight these ice masses' critical role in sustaining Asia's water resources.
As the largest ice reserve outside the polar regions, the Third Pole holds approximately 100,000 km² of glaciers and 8,000 gigatons of ice, feeding major lakes and over ten significant rivers, including the Yangtze, Ganges, and Indus. However, rapid glacier melt due to climate change threatens water resources, ecosystems, and regional stability.
This event, taking place on March 21, 2025, at UNESCO HQ in Paris, will bring together leading experts to discuss the latest scientific findings, challenges, and potential solutions. Among the esteemed speakers, Distinguished University Professor Lonnie Thompson from the Byrd Center's Ice Core Paleoclimatology Research Group at The Ohio State University will be a featured guest lecturer.
Other speakers include experts from China, the Netherlands, Austria, and the United States.
The event co-organizers are the Third Pole Environment program and the Urban Justice League.
The event is open to scientists, policymakers, young researchers, and local communities, with opportunities for both in-person and online participation.
