Dr. Stacy Porter is a postdoctoral researcher studying climate science at the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at OSU. She uses ice cores from around the globe to examine the history of Earth’s climate before instrumental records. Dr. Proter will be giving a talk about climate change and her experience with ice core research.
Many impacts of global climate change are already evident across our planet; for example, glaciers around the world are retreating, sea level is rising, the ocean is becoming more acidic and weather patterns are changing. Although our meteorological records are relatively short they can be augmented with additional information retrieved from polar and tropical, high-elevation ice fields to reconstruct past climates and place current climate change within the longer context of Earth’s climate history. This field of study is called ice core paleoclimatology. The fundamentals of global climate change and ice core science will be presented
