Topic: Antarctic Field Reports from the Ross Ice Shelf, Transantarctic Mountains, and West Antarctica
Abstract:
Jamey will discuss recent fieldwork, supported by Antarctica New Zealand and the Antarctic Science Platform, in which his team sampled glacial deposits along the mighty Byrd Glacier. This field work aims to compliment previous work to reconstruct changes along one of the largest glaciers on the planet and provides clues to the future of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and global sea level rise.
Alex will discuss the field operations and science conducted by the Sensitivity of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to two degrees Celsius warming (SWAIS-2C) project. The SWAIS-2C project hot water drilled through the Ross Ice Shelf to access the sedimentary ecosystem and paleoclimate record stored in the sub seafloor sediments. The samples and data collected from this project provide insights into the ecosystem function of sub seafloor sediments and clues as to what the Antarctic climate was like when the West Antarctic Ice Sheet was both more and less extensive compared to today.
