Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society Conference 2026 (VICS 2026 Conference)

Colorful layered cliffs with red, purple, and tan sediment slopes descending to a rocky shoreline beside a blue lake, with sparse green vegetation at the base.
Tue, June 16 - Thu, June 18, 2026
12:00 am - 12:00 pm
School of Physics & Astronomy - University of St Andrews

Conference Information:

The meeting will be divided into Past, Present and Future research themes. They seek contributions from those interested in:

  • Volcanology and hazards
  • Climate and volcanic proxies
  • Observations and models
  • Human impacts in history and archaeology

The workshop also has a number of specific objectives:

  1. Identify key knowledge gaps in proxy and historical datasets, and in our understanding of volcanic eruption (e.g. plume processes, atmospheric chemistry, or climate dynamics).
  2.  Develop an integrated strategy for eruption targets and research activities to address these knowledge gaps. \
  3. Establish new collaborations with cross-disciplinary groups (e.g., economists and food scientists) to identify how VICS datasets and models can be applied to ‘real-world’ systems.
  4. Identify VICS community data needs (e.g., large eruption and/or impact databases) and agree a strategy on how to structure and deliver these.

Key Dates:

  • Conference dates: Tuesday 16th June - Thursday 18th June 2026
  • Call for abstracts and registration open: Early December 2025
  • Abstract submission, travel grant application deadline: 13 April 2026
