Enhanced winter observations improve weather forecasting over Antarctica and the Southern Ocean

David Bromwich, professor in the Department of Geography at The Ohio State University and principal investigator with the Polar Meteorology Group at the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, and his colleagues published research in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society describing winter targeted observing periods conducted during the 2022 Year of Polar Prediction in the Southern Hemisphere.

Across seven targeted observing periods, participating stations launched about 1,100 additional radiosondes, more than doubling routine observations at 24 stations operated by 14 countries. The added observations are helping researchers test ways to improve numerical weather prediction over Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.
