The article states, "To become a Distinguished University Professor, you must be an excellent teacher. A community servant. A scholar whose ideas crackle, pop and push boundaries." It goes on to celebrate 10 of the 85 faculty members who have received Ohio State's highest faculty honor.

Thompson, professor in the School of Earth Sciences and senior research scientist at the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, was featured first in the list. The magazine describes him as "the famous Buckeye" and notes that he "is a pioneer using glacier cores to investigate climate change."
