Remembering Peter Barret, Antarctic Scientist and Ohio State Alumnus

The Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center joins the Antarctic research community in remembering Professor Peter Barrett, a distinguished Antarctic scientist, Ohio State geology alumnus, and longtime friend of the Byrd Center, who passed away on September 26, 2026, at the age of 86.

Barrett earned his PhD in geology from The Ohio State University before going on to become a leading figure in Antarctic Earth science. He was the founding director of the Antarctic Research Centre at Victoria University of Wellington, serving as director from 1972 to 2007. Over the course of his career, Barrett helped advance understanding of Antarctica’s geological and climate history through decades of research and international collaboration.

His contributions included leadership and involvement in major Antarctic geological drilling projects, including the Cape Roberts Project and ANDRILL, which provided important records of past changes in Antarctica’s ice and climate. His impact on Antarctic science is also reflected on the continent itself, where Barrett Glacier and the Barrett Nunataks bear his name.

The Byrd Center remembers Barrett not only for his significant contributions to Antarctic science, but also for his longstanding connection to Ohio State and friendship with the polar research community. We extend our condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the many researchers he influenced throughout his career.
