Water Imbalance Created in Tibetan Plateau as a Result of Climate Change Will Lead to Conflict

In a recent interview with Ohio State News Science Journalist Tatyana Woodall, Lonnie Thompson, Byrd Center Senior Research Scientist and Distinguished University Professor at The Ohio State University School of Earth Sciences, shared his collaborative research on the water imbalance in the Tibetan Plateau due to climate change. He discussed how this imbalance, stemming from uneven, rapid melting of snow and glaciers in the northern and southern regions, in combination with population growth and increased water demand, may lead to international and intranational conflict. Dr. Thompson is also co-chair of Third Pole Environment and honorary member at the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research (ITP) and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Read more about this research and recommendations on how to combat such threats here.
