Starting this month, The Ohio State University will offer a new certificate program in Climate Change Fundamentals. This program has been developed based on internal and external feedback gathered over two years and will be co-led by Professors Matt Saltzman in the School of Earth Sciences and Bryan Mark in the Department of Geography. The interdisciplinary curriculum has been designed to cater to the demand for a workforce to tackle climate change challenges and build a sustainable future. The certificate combines foundational Earth system science with the human dimensions of climate change. It includes a capstone course experience focused on problem-based and experiential learning, emphasizing teamwork and communication skills; this will also help build relationships with the community and employers. Ohio State's Provost, Melissa Gilliam, has prioritized sustainability education in her new Academic Plan, and the Sustainability Institute at Ohio State is facilitating efforts to create new curricular opportunities such as the Climate Change Fundamentals Certificate. Employers and alums have indicated that an interdisciplinary background and real-world experience are highly sought-after qualifications.
