Mary's specialization is in the measurement of particle concentrations and size distributions in ice cores, and particle characterization using light microscope, scanning electron microscope and electron microprobe techniques. She has participated in field programs in China, Peru, and Africa. Mary's dissertation is entitled "Climatic Interpretations of Aeolian Dust Records from Low-latitude, High-alititude Ice Cores."
