George Grant began at OSU in the fall of 2015. He is primarily working on the reconstruction of a fossil forest in the Canadian High Arctic. George grew up in Maine, completed a B.S. in Biology and Geology at Castleton State College (now Castleton University) in the spring of 2014. Since then he has worked for the US Forest Service as a field biologist specializing in aquatics and as an intern for the US Food and Drug Administration in chemical informatics. He is very excited about the prospect of working with some of the leaders in the field of paleoclimatology in the Arctic, contributing to the understanding of the climate of ancient Earth and how the impact of human activity will change the current climate. He is also an avid skier, backpacker, rock climber and is excited about most things that mean an excuse to be outside.

George Grant is in the second year of his PhD program in the School of Earth Sciences. He completed his undergraduate degree at Castleton University, double majoring in biology and geology. It was during this training that George realized his passion for the climate and how this impacts the ecosystems that support life on Earth. In the Barker lab, he is analyzing a Pliocene fossil forest deposit that was recently discovered by Dr. Barker on Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada. This site represents a climate that is very similar to the atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases that will be reached before the end of the 21st century. This site (and others like it) suggests a drastically different ecosystem composition in the Arctic during the Pliocene. This raises the question; how are contemporary Arctic ecosystems going to change with rapid changes in climate that we are currently experiencing? Furthermore, how could deposits like this make changes to the contemporary ecosystems themselves? These two broad questions are two that George intends to contribute to answering during his time at Ohio State University.
