The Research Commons will be hosting events throughout the week of February 10-14 as part of an international celebration of research data. The theme this year is “Whose Data Is It, Anyway?” Join them in-person or online for resources, workshops, and speakers that highlight the ethics and practicalities of data created by and for people.

Monday, February 10
The Ethics of Using Public Social Media Data for Research

Kick-off the week with a virtual panel exploring data transparency, ownership, and public trust when conducting research with social media data sources.

R for Scientific Reproducibility
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Online and at the Research Commons
Gain hands-on experience using the R programming language to make your research more efficient and reproducible. No prior experience is required. Registration includes breakfast.
Wednesday, February 12
For the Love of Student Data: Finding Student Information at Ohio State
11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Research Commons
How do you find data on students? What are the best practices? In this interactive session, staff from Institutional Research & Planning will review best practices around finding student data. Participants who bring a device will have the opportunity to participate in a student quiz to win prizes!
Resource Fair: Finding Secondary Data

Ever wondered where to find the perfect data set for your research or instruction? Join us for a resource fair of Ohio State archives, repositories, and centers that provide access to research data. Registration includes lunch.

Join us for a multi-disciplinary panel exploring how genomic, ecological, and sociological data can contribute to sovereignty and self-determination for Indigenous communities.

Version Control with Git
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Online and at the Research Commons
Code is data! Join us for a hands-on workshop on using Git and GitHub for solo or collaborative version control. No prior experience is required. Registration includes breakfast.
Big Ten Data Viz Championship
2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Zoom
Showcase your data visualization skills and compete for the title of Big Ten Academic Alliance Data Viz Champion! OSU submissions are due 1/16/25, with a public award ceremony on 2/14/25.
