Kira Harris, a third-year undergraduate student majoring in Earth Sciences and an Education and Outreach Intern at the Byrd Center, used her McKenzie-Brecher Scholarship to purchase equipment for her undergraduate research project and support travel to a national meeting.
Last summer, Kira aided graduate student Amelia Nelson in her thesis data collection in Colorado. While there, Kira was able to collect her own data to better understand the physical behavior of alpine rivers.
This data was then analyzed and the preliminary results presented as a first-author poster at the 2018 Geological Society of America’s Annual Meeting in Indianapolis where she earned a Hydrogeology Section award.
