NOAA Chief Scientist Discusses Climate and Health at BPCRC

Dr. Richard Spinrad

The Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center and American Lung Association hosted a viewing of the live webcast for the Whitehouse Summit on Climate and Health. This Summit brought together professionals from a variety of disciplines to discuss the public health impacts of climate change and identify opportunities to minimize these impacts. Following the viewing, Dr. Richard Spinrad, Chief Scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), provided additional comments and further discussed the implications of public health and climate change. Dr. Spinrad discussed the importance of addressing public health issues in an increasingly climate-sensitive world and touched on many of the actions NOAA is taking to better understand and address these issues on a domestic level. Some topics of interest include development of an improved forecasting system for climate impacts and the creation of a national heat and health information system. The full video of Dr. Spinrad's talk can be viewed here.

The Columbus Dispatch and The Toledo Blade both featured articles on the event.
