Ohio State News recently reported on The Ohio State University's efforts and progress toward reducing its carbon footprint stemming from sustainability goals set in 2015. To date, the university has reduced its carbon footprint by 30% and plans to accelerate its sustainability goals to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050 or sooner based on operational, financial, and environmental considerations.

Ohio State's sustainability goals were partly set by addressing energy efficiency, zero waste, alternative fuels, improving the ecosystem, and decreasing water usage.

To achieve its goals, the university has invested in large impactful initiatives such as building a Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHP) that will help serve the Columbus campus and support expansions, such as a new inpatient hospital, and the Carmenton innovation district, home to the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center. The university is also constructing the Energy Advancement and Innovation Center, which will be powered by rooftop solar energy. Ohio State also works with the private sector on smart energy systems, renewable energy, and green mobility solutions.
