Pete Anderson Honored by the American Polar Society
Peter J. Anderson, former Assistant Director of the Institute of Polar Studies (now the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center), was awarded an Honorary Membership in the American Polar Society at their symposium in November 2015. In 1989, the Society designated Pete as the Secretary of APS after the 1988 death of the founder and president, August Howard. The records and the papers of the Society were transferred to the Byrd Center and are now part of the BPCRC Polar Archives. At the 2015 symposium, Pete was recognized for his efforts to continue the legacy of August Howard and the Society. Unfortunately, Pete was unable to attend the 2015 Symposium in California to receive his award. Instead, David Elliot, a former Director of the Byrd Center, presented the award to him at a BPCRC luncheon held in Pete’s honor on December 7, 2015. To this day, Pete continues to be a valuable contributor to the Society’s publication, The Polar Times.
