About This Event Please join us for a three-day professional development program for educators. Sessions will be targeted at middle school grades, but content could be adapted for use with older or younger audiences. Each day of this workshop will feature two 60-minute sessions. Once registered, participants can access every session using the same Zoom connection and password. Certificates of attendance will be provided for attendees who may pursue CEUs through their local professional development committee. Please join us on the dates and times listed in the agenda below: Tuesday, August 4 10:00 - 11:00 AM - Explore the Mighty Mussels of Ohio's Waters 2:00 - 3:00 PM - Playing with Math Wednesday, August 5 10:00 - 11:00 AM - The Solar System with the Arne Slettebak Planetarium 2:00 - 3:00 PM - Preventing Prescription Drug Misuse: Tools to help present & advocate for safe medication practices across the lifespan Thursday, August 6 10:00 - 11:00 AM August 6- Exploring Earth’s Climate: Past, present, and future 2:00 - 3:00 PM August 6 - Greening the Classroom: Using plants to teach science   Explore the Mighty Mussels of Ohio's Waters This session will focus on learning about ecological connections by focusing on fresh water mussels, an important and federally protected group of animals in Ohio. In this session, participants will: Learn about the Museum of Biological Diversity (MBD) at The Ohio State University, which houses over 1 million specimens including the largest collection of freshwater mussels. Be introduced to a new classroom module to tour our facilities and TRAINED to lead your class through mussel identification along with a suite of ready-to-teach lab modules for K-12 education. Have the option to sign up for Zoom chats with Trisha Gibson or Ivea Roznere, scientists who work at the Columbus Zoo’s mussel rehabilitation facility. Learn about the MBD outreach programs, including opportunities for virtual programming.    Playing with Math This session will focus on a selection of hands-on, digital, and print materials that allow K-12 students to explore mathematics and develop the desired mathematical practices, according to the education standards, while playing. In this session, participants will: Learn about the outreach program of the Department of Mathematics at The Ohio State University and the opportunities it provides for students inside and outside of the classroom.  Be introduced to a module that invites students to play a game or puzzle and then guides them to explore the math behind. The games and puzzles are such as polyominoes, Tower of Hanoi, games on graphs, magic tricks, and triangular dominoes, and touch on concepts such as combinations, spatial reasoning, exponents, algebraic expressions, series, and numerical systems. Discuss module adaptations for blended and/or virtual learning.    The Solar System with the Arne Slettebak planetarium This session will focus on comparing planets and explaining the motions we see in our solar system: Distances to objects in the solar system – units and scale models Motions, orbits – how they relate to formation of the Solar System. Interactions between objects – collisions, craters, rings Comparative planetology – comparing the planets based on what we observe.   Preventing Prescription Drug Misuse: Tools to help present & advocate for safe medication practices across the lifespan Prescription medications can help us live longer and healthier lives, but any medication has the potential to do harm – especially when misused.  This session will focus on the free, ready-to-use resources that educators can use to promote drug misuse prevention for K-12 and beyond. In this session, participants will: Learn about the scope of the prescription drug misuse epidemic including the cause and consequences of misuse. Explore how Generation Rx, a nation-wide education initiative founded at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, can help support your classroom and community needs around drug misuse prevention. Learn and practice how to adapt the educational activities of the Teen Toolkit (1 out of 5 available toolkits) for blended and/or virtual learning.   Exploring Earth’s Climate: Past, present, and future This session will focus on a selection of hands-on, digital, and print materials that allow K-12 students to explore Earth’s climate using practices demanded by contemporary education standards. In this session, participants will: Learn how to create classroom ice cores for students to make observations and claims about past climates. Be introduced to Virtual Ice Explorer, an online tool that allow youth to join field researchers as they collect ice core and investigate Earth’s ice-covered regions. Learn about the drivers of present climates around the world and examine some of the impacts of climate change. Be introduced to Fluid Earth Viewer, an online tool that allows youth to explore Earth’s atmosphere and oceans. Learn about additional Byrd Center resources, including videos, lessons, and in-person/virtual programs.   Greening the Classroom: Using plants to teach science This session will focus on how plants can be used to teach science in K-12 classrooms using Arabidopsis, an important model system in plant science research. In this session, participants will: Learn about the Arabidopsis Biological Resource Center (ABRC) at The Ohio State University, one of two global stock centers providing Arabidopsis seeds and DNA to researchers and educators worldwide. Be introduced to ABRC’s Greening the Classroom and TRAINED initiatives, which include a suite of ready-to-teach lab modules for K-12 education. Learn about ABRC outreach programs, including opportunities for virtual programming.  Be introduced to Play Mendel Basic, a lab module that provides a hands-on demonstration of Mendelian genetics, and discuss module adaptations for blended and/or virtual learning. This program was developed as a collaborative effort between the Arabidopsis Biological Resource Center, the Arne Slettebak planetarium, the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, the College of Pharmacy, the Department of Mathematics at The Ohio State University, and the Museum of Biological Diversity.
